In the world of visual novels, there are an immense amount of games which never receive an English-language release. Until recently, it had seemed Littlewitch Romanesque was left to that fate. Originally released back in 2005 in Japan, the unique tale of magic, mystery, and romance seemed an impossible localization proposition. However, JAST USA had their eye on the product and has since released two versions - Littlewitch Romanesque: Editio Regia and Editio Perfecta. This review focuses on the former, while briefly touching on the differences later.

Littlewitch Romanesque tells the story of Domino, a young wizard who has just been given the powerful rank of Archmage. All he wishes to do is explore the Dark Tower, which is said to house ancient magical power. However, the Grimoire, a group of appointed wizards, don’t grant him unrestricted access. To inhabit and search the Tower, he must agree to take care of two young apprentices - Aria and Kaya. Both girls are full of youthful exuberance but completely unskilled in the art of magic. Domino has three years to raise them into skilled witches, or he will have failed his side of the bargain.

The journey through Littlewitch Romanesque introduces players to a cast of characters that enrich the experience. As expected from children, Aria and Kaya are a handful. Aria is a direct descendant of royalty but hardly acts the part, with her stubborn demeanor making it seem she doesn’t care about magic, despite her inherent affinity. Conversely, Kaya, who had a troubled youth and was adopted by Grimoire wizards, is quiet, kind, and eager to pursue magical studies. While these two are the main apprentices, the Dark Tower soon fills up with other characters, almost all of whom are women, a familiar setup for fans of visual novels.

Don’t let this make your perception of Littlewitch Romanesque turn to that of a vapid game with nothing more than pretty characters to pursue. In fact, much of the game focuses on magical elements and character development. Reading through provides an involving story that feels open enough to appeal to all sorts of folks. If you were ever taken in by the Harry Potter series, you’ll probably feel right at home in this game’s world. The absence of sexual content in Editio Regia further enhances its mass appeal, as it caters to players who may find such themes uncomfortable or who are not old enough to engage in them. Even those who aren’t particularly fond of visual novels might find the gameplay engaging.

The gameplay mainly revolves around a dice minigame. To train Aria and Kaya’s magical abilities, you must roll two sets of dice, where each face has a symbol corresponding to a type of magical training. The faces facing up at the end of a roll grant little stat boosts to each respective girl. Additionally, players or the characters themselves can initiate spells, which activate automatically if certain symbols align, providing opportunities to multiply stat boosts and other great features. Despite its somewhat complex setup, the game quickly becomes intuitive. Once you accumulate enough skill points, they can be traded for new spells, which are crucial for taking on quests.
